Marissa Mayer has said she wants to make Flickr "awesome again," and now she is bringing on an exec from Google to help do so.

Yahoo hired former Google exec Bernardo Hernandez to take over as the head of Flickr. Hernandez joined Google in 2005 and held several marketing positions before taking over as the head of Zagat, which Google acquired in late 2011.

Hernandez announced his move to Yahoo in a post on Twitter:

AllThingsD reports that Hernandez was one of Mayer's "favorite" coworkers when she worked at Google and that he has actually been at Yahoo for "some weeks" in an unspecified role.

Mayer was quick to chime in publicly on his hiring:

Mayer, who worked at Google immediately prior to taking over as CEO of Yahoo, has recruited several top execs from her former employer, including Henrique de Castro as COO, Anne Espiritu as PR direction and Patricia Moll Kriese as senior director.

During her first year in the CEO position, Mayer has worked to revamp several core Yahoo products, including Flickr, which Yahoo acquired in 2005 only to let languish for years. Earlier this year, Yahoo overhauled the look of Flickr and increased the amount of free storage users get to one terabyte.
