Yahoo Buys Social Browser Maker Rockmelt
What's This?
Yahoo's epic acquisition binge continued on Friday with the purchase of social browser maker Rockmelt.
Rockmelt announced the move on its blog: "Yahoo and Rockmelt share a common goal: To help people discover the best content from around the web."
AllThingsD reports that Yahoo paid $60 million to $70 million for the firm. Yahoo plans to use the browser technology "turbocharge" its media properties, according to the report.
Formed in 2009, Rockmelt has more than 4 million users. The company released its desktop app in 2010 and then moved to mobile with an iPhone app in late 2012. The mobile focus was a key draw for Yahoo, which has sought to reinvent itself under CEO Marissa Mayer as an integral part of a consumer's mobile lifestyle.
