Tech and Global Activism Will Collide at Social Good Summit 2014
What's This?
The Social Good Summit brings together world leaders, grassroots activists and global citizens to discuss digital solutions to the the greatest challenges of our time. We’re excited to announce that the Social Good Summit is back for a fifth year on Sept. 21-22, 2014.
This year, we’re continuing the theme #2030Now. Speakers will analyze how communities are using the digital tools of today to plan for a brighter future by the year 2030. With the pending close of the 2015 Millennium Development Goals — a series of eight goals set by the United Nations that includes challenges like halving extreme poverty and providing universal primary education — the Social Good Summit is looking to what lies ahead. What’s the future of technology, and how can it be used for social good to provide equity for all?
At the 2014 Summit, communities around the globe will meet to discuss themes like equality, climate change, artificial intelligence, drones, clean energy, women’s empowerment, 3D printing and much more. At the Social Good Summit event in New York, Mashable will be joined on stage by thought leaders passionate about making a difference in the world. The 2014 speaker roster includes:
Yael Maguire, Engineering Director at Facebook’s Connectivity Lab
Megan Smith, Vice President of Google X
Avi Reichental, CEO of 3D Systems
Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chairman of the Yunus, Chairman of the Yunus Center and Founder of Grameen Bank
Troy Carter, Founder and CEO of Atom Factory
Pete Cashmore, Founder and CEO of Mashable
Wendy Norman, Director of Skype for Good
Kathy Calvin, CEO of United Nations Foundation
Kumi Naidoo, Executive Director of Greenpeace International
Helen Clark, Administrator of United Nations Development Programme
In addition to the event in New York, satellite meetups will take place in cities around the world. This year meetups are already confirmed in Albania, Algeria, Burundi, China, El Salvador, Lebanon, Rwanda, Uzbekistan, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Mashable started the Social Good Summit in 2010 to foster a more open conversation around topics discussed during the United Nations General Assembly, a convening of world leaders held during the same week in September. This year the Social Good Summit partners (Mashable, the United Nations Foundation, the United Nations Development Programme, the 92nd Street Y and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) are ready for the 2014 Summit to be bigger than ever.
