9/11 Truther Gate-Crashes Tight Super Bowl Security
What's This?
This was supposed to be the most secure Super Bowl in history, and for nearly six hours (including the actual game and pre-game show), it was. However, partway through the Seattle Seahawks' post-game press conference, a random and somewhat agitated man ran up on stage, grabbed the microphone from Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith and demanded someone "investigate 9/11."
That man, who was quickly hustled offstage, is identified by NJ.com as Matthew Mills. Mills is described as a "9/11 truther" — someone who questions who should be held responsible for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
As soon as Mills got ahold of the mic, he said, "Investigate 9/11. 9/11 was perpetrated by people within our own government." Once Mills was ushered away, Smith looked around, dumbstruck. "All right...is everyone all right?" he said, before continuing the press conference. (Watch the full video above.)
Mills made it through multiple security checks, according to NJ.com, by boarding an employee bus, using some cobbled-together badges (none of which were for the venue, game or media access) and fast-talking anyone who tried to check his credentials. After Mills left the stage, he was reportedly arrested.
"I didn't think that I'd get that far," Mill told NJ.com. "I just kept getting closer and closer. Once I got past the final gate and into the stadium, I was dumbfounded."
It's a stunning turn of events, considering Super Bowl XLVIII had "the biggest and most-expensive security net in the 48-year history of the game," per NBC News.
The New Jersey State Police Department was in charge of the security operation, but has not yet responded to Mashable's request for comment.
