Like Cyndi Lauper and her girls, the Recording Academy just wants to have fun. Lauper has been chosen to host this year's Grammy Awards Pre-Telecast Ceremony, which will be live streamed on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. PT on Grammy.com/live and CBS.com.
The "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time" singer, who is nominated for Best Musical Theater Album for Kinky Boots, will help present more than 70 awards that won't be televised in the main show later that night. Lauper, 60, won Best Score for Kinky Boots at last year's Tony Awards.
The live streamed ceremony will be available to stream online for 30 days after the ceremony, which features performances from nominees Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite, Sarah Jarosz, Hiatus Kaiyote, Roomful of Teeth, La Santa Cecilia and Summer Horns with the Larry Batiste Orchestra and special guest Verdine White.
The 56th Grammy Awards will air on CBS at 5 p.m. PT on Jan. 26. Jay Z leads the pack of nominees with nods in nine categories. The veteran rapper came out on top on the strength of his 12th studio album, Magna Carta Holy Grail . This year, Jay Z gave away one million copies of the album, purchased for $5 each by Samsung, to one million Samsung Galaxy owners, who had to download an app to snag a copy. The marketing stunt influenced the Recording Industry Association of America to "modernize" its 55-year-old certification process to immediately include digital sales.
Up for seven nominations each are Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Pharrell Williams and Justin Timberlake. Drake and Bob Ludwig snagged five nods, while Daft Punk, Lorde, Bruno Mars, Kacey Musgraves and Taylor Swift each earned four nominations.
