Ezra Klein Joins Vox Media to Launch News Site

Following his high-profile departure from the Washington Post last week, journalist Ezra Klein has announced plans to launch a new news site with Vox Media.

“Early last year, Melissa Bell, Matt Yglesias and I began wrestling with a question that had bugged all of us for a long time: why hadn't the Internet made the news better at delivering crucial context alongside new information?” wrote Klein in a post on the The Verge on Sunday. “This year, we're founding a new publication at Vox Media in order to do something about it.”

Unlike the other category-specific sites in the Vox Media stable — SB Nation (sports), The Verge (tech), Curbed (real estate) and Polygon (gaming) — Klein’s site, currently referred to as “Project X,” appears to have a broad focus.

On the site’s job listings web page, the team states that the new site will cover “everything from tax policy to [the television show] True Detective.”

According to some reports, Klein was looking for something in the range of $10 million to fund the new start-up.

Klein did not reveal the funding amount Vox Media has committed to the venture, but the publisher has established a reputation for big launches and reportedly raised $34 million in new funding in October.

Although the exact focus and approach of the new site remains a mystery, Klein's initial message promoting the venture promises big things, saying, “Our mission is to create a site that's as good at explaining the world as it is at reporting on it."
