Apple announced on Monday a new initiative called HomeKit to ultimately revolutionize the home and make it significantly smarter.
The platform was introduced during a keynote presentation at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference at the Moscone West center in San Francisco, where the company detailed new features coming to the next-generation software for the iPhone and iPad.
HomeKit has the potential to ignite the home automation (smart home) industry, as well as the so-called Internet of Things world. The platform was detailed to developer attendees, encouraging them to create software that will work with iOS 8.
The platform will allow users to control locks, lights, cameras, doors, thermostats, plugs and switches at the home, most likely via an iOS 8 app Home. It also promises to control individual devices, secure pairing and integration with other products.
