Heinz Tomato Ketchup's Super Bowl Ad Will Leave You Clapping Your Hands

What's This?

Heinz Ketchup is back in the Super Bowl after 16 years, with a feel-good montage — punctuated by a fart joke.

Set to the tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It," the ad brings you across the country, highlighting the endless situations where Americans can enjoy the condiment. From diners to campfires, weddings to hot dog stands, a collection of people young and old hum the childhood tune, and in place of clapping their hands, they smack the bottom of the classic glass bottle.

The ad ends with an elderly woman attempting to retrieve ketchup from the end of a squeeze bottle, complete with the embarrassing sound it can make, and the tagline," Where there's happy, it has to be Heinz Tomato Ketchup."

It's not clear why Heinz — whose ketchup enjoys a commanding lead in the category — has returned to the game after such a long absence. According to Ad Age , Heinz's decision may be part of a strategy to raise the profile of the ketchup brand's parent company or perhaps to raise awareness for the brand on a global level.
