'Sherlock' Prequel Episode Hints at World Travel, Secret Messages

What's This?

With the first episode of Sherlock slated to air in the UK on New Year's Day, the BBC has released an early holiday treat for fans who are eagerly awaiting the great detective's return: a mini episode.

Entitled "Many Happy Returns," the seven-minute prequel details a little of what the eccentric Sherlock Holmes has been up to — that is, mostly world traveling and solving crimes. Still, his path is leading him back to London, where sidekick John Watson is still grieving Holmes' supposed death.

Watson receives a tape from Inspector Lestrade, which Sherlock filmed before his demise. In it, he tells Watson, "Oh, and don't worry, I'm going to be with you again very soon."

Was Sherlock leaving messages that hint at his return, as the episode suggests? For answers, fans will just have to wait until the premiere.

Sherlock will premiere Jan. 1 in the UK on BBC and Jan. 19 on PBS for American viewers.
