Watch a 5-Minute Playthrough of 'Super Mario Bros.' Break a Record
What's This?
You probably never played Super Mario Bros. like this as a kid. Gamer "Blubber" posted a video of his speedrun through the original Super Mario Bros. from 1985, in which he beat the previous record by a second.
Blubber broadcast his run on Twitch over the weekend. He utilizes every possible warp pipe and glitch, along with excellent timing, to defeat bowser and save the princess. His total time was 4 minutes and 57.69 seconds, and he never stopped for a single mushroom.
Speedrunning is a popular streaming activity on Twitch, where gamers frequently try to crush others' records in the fastest time through classic games. Last week, a marathon of speedrunning called Summer Games Done Quick raised more than $700,000 for Doctors Without Borders.
Blubber said his runs of Super Mario Bros. are performed on an emulator, rather than the actual NES cartridge, but he assures viewers he wasn't utilizing any additional software to cut down on his time. You can watch his entire run above in the time it takes the rest of your coworkers to take a coffee break.
