Samsung and Apple, the worlds two biggest smartphone makers, have each scored victories in patent disputes fought over four continents since the maker of the iPhone accused Asias biggest electronics maker of slavishly copying its devices.

After three days of deliberation, a San Jose court has found Samsung guilty of infringement on a number of Apple smartphone patents — just as it did in a similar patent case two years ago.

A four-man, four-woman jury has been deliberating the case for the past three days, and announced that they had a verdict shortly after 5pm Pacific time. The amount of damages the jury said Samsung should pay Apple: $119 million, somewhat short of the $2.2 billion the Cupertino company is asking for.

Apple says Samsung infringed on five of its patents, in effect stealing key elements of the iPhone's design for a whole range of Samsung smartphones, each of which Apple is seeking to remove from the market (and to get punitive damages for). Some of the phones have been phased out already, such is the slow pace of the legal system compared to the smartphone cycle.

Samsung purchased several software patents of its own, and is wielding those against Apple's iOS in a kind of rear-guard action.

The verdict is still coming in, so check back later as we learn more details.
