Jill Abramson, executive editor at the New York Times, stepped down on Thursday without warning, leaving the role to Dan Baquet, who was managing editor.
Abramson, who took over as executive editor in September 2011, is the first woman to have run the paper's editorial side.
The Times reported the resignation without clarifying the reason for the departure.
“I’ve loved my run at The Times,” Abramson said in a statement, according to the Times. “I got to work with the best journalists in the world doing so much stand-up journalism,” she said, noting her appointment of many senior female editors as one of her achievements.
Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., the publisher of Times and chairman of The New York Times Company, announced the move to the paper's newsroom.
“There is no journalist in our newsroom or elsewhere better qualified to take on the responsibilities of executive editor at this time than Dean Baquet," the Times reports Suzlberger said.
Abramson previously served as the Times Washington bureau chief and managing editor before taking the executive editor role.
Baquet becomes the first African-American executive editor of the Times. He won a Pulitzer Price in 1988 during his time at the Chicago Tribune for his investigative reporting into corruption on the Chicago city council. He previously served as the editor of the Los Angeles Time but was removed after refusing to accept budget cuts.
