Great Response to Racist Taunt: Soccer Star Eats Banana Thrown at Him

What's This?

As Barcelona player Dani Alves was getting ready to perform a free kick during Sunday's game against Villarreal, one of the viewers threw a banana at him, a racist taunt often directed at players of darker skin.

But Alves had the best possible response: he ate the banana and continued the free kick as if nothing had happened.

As you can see in the video above, everything happened extremely fast: under ten seconds. But that was still enough time for Alves to peel of the banana and grab a bite before continuing the play.

Racism is still a big problem for soccer in Europe, even though soccer's main governing body Fifa (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) has in May 2013 adopted a strict policy against racist incidents. Teams can get ordered to play a match behind closed doors, and they can even lose points or get expelled for repeated offenses of their fans.
