A number of Twitter users received an email from the company on Monday, informing them that their passwords were reset due to a security issue with a third-party website. Twitter said that the password reset notices were sent due to an error on its own part.

"We unintentionally sent some password reset notices tonight due to a system error. We apologize to the affected users for the inconvenience," Twitter told CNET . The company did not reveal how many users were affected by the reset.

Twitter had a similar issue in November 2012, when it reset many users' passwords due to a security incident, but also unintentionally reset a larger number of accounts that were not compromised.
