34 Couples Marry as Madonna, Macklemore Perform at Grammys

Love was in the air at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards Sunday night.

During an emotional performance of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's Grammy-nominated song Same Love, 34 couples were married live on-air.

Queen Latifah officiated, and Madonna appeared on stage after the couples exchanged rings to perform.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were nominated for seven Grammys, and won one for Best New Artist.

According to The New York Times , a casting agency was used to find the couples who would be married on stage. Lewis's sister was one of the brides during the performance.

“A night that is already tremendous for me, for the music,” Lewis said to the Times, “but to have my sister get married and my family there watching it — that makes it a whole other level of amazing.”

But rumors are circulating that the marriages were simply a symbolic act and that the exchanges of rings were not binding by law.
