Tired of Living on Land? Behold the Floating City

What's This?

The city of the future might require you to pack your bags and head for the high seas, if a Florida company called Freedom Ship International gets its way.

The $10 billion Freedom Ship project would gives its passengers the experience of living completely at sea. The company hopes to build a 4,500 foot long, 750 foot wide ship that includes virtually everything its citizenry — up to 40,000 people — could need.

The ship would offer education for kids in kindergarten through 12th grade, along with healthcare for all ages. Passengers would also enjoy a casino, commercial district, art museums, aquariums and more. These would make up the 25 stories above the main deck of the ship.

The Freedom Ship website bills its traveling city as an "ideal place to live or run a business." The plan is to run an airport on the top deck for private and small commercial aircraft. The ship will take passengers around the world every two years, and will spend a good amount of its time offshore near major cities.

As on a cruise, of course, passengers can step off to explore the area nearby. Planned stopping points include San Francisco, New York, Nigeria, Hong Kong, and Sydney. The only difference: this cruise doesn't have to end.

Freedom Ship International says it will begin constructing the ship once it raises its first $1 billion. So if this is your ship, you may have to wait a while for it to sail.
