NBA Star Under Fire For Threatening Rival on Twitter
What's This?
J.R. Smith is back at it again.
The NBA star had another Twitter mishap this week when he quickly escalated a war of digital words on fellow trigger-happy chucker Brandon Jennings. But Smith took things a step further by threatening Jennings with a potential visit by his "street homies" to Detroit, where Jennings plays for the Pistons.
The drama started when Jennings posted an incredulous tweet about Smith's brother getting a guaranteed contract with Smith's team, the New York Knicks.
The tweet, which has since been deleted, read: "Wait wait wait JR smith brother is in the NBA but @PoohJeter & @BBROWNLAU isn't. Call me hater but not Rollin!!!"
The two other players mentioned in Jennings' tweet are currently playing in China. While Jennings didn't include Smith's Twitter handle, that didn't stop Smith from seeing the post, taking umbrage and firing off a subtweet of his own.
Then he posted the apparent threat, which has also since been deleted: "Might call some of my Number street homies an put #Detroit on smash for a min! #DeadSerious"
Smith's brother, Chris, tried to cool things off, but J.R. wouldn't have it.
The league is reportedly investigating Smith's tweets, and it's likely he will draw a fine. Asked about the apparent threat on Thursday, Smith offered a priceless denial.
"There's a way to threaten somebody and that's not the way, to publicly threaten somebody," he told the Associated Press.
Duly noted. It's just the latest example of why Smith is our top-rated NBA Twitter follow.
