GOG Offers Free Games to Furloughed Government Workers
What's This?
If you've been sent home from work due to the government shutdown, you might have a lot of extra time on your hands and a new-found serious concern for your finances.
For those wanting to fill that time with video games, classic PC game distribution service GOG is offering a score of free games in exchange for evidence you've been furloughed.
GOG is offering a "Shutdown Promo" full of games that simulate governments or cities, since "there are people on Capitol Hill who don't know what a functioning government looks like." The games include Capitalism Plus and Capitalism 2, which are economics sims, Tropico Reloaded, where you become the dictator of an island, and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, where you bring government to space. There's also shooter Redneck Rampage, hospital simulator Theme Hospital, and 1400's Europe sim The Guild: Golden Age.
Anyone looking to grab all the classic titles — most were produced in the late 1990s or early 2000s — for free just needs to mail a picture of them holding their furlough letter to thanksobama@gog.com.
The games are also available for 50% off for everyone else. The promotion ends at noon ET on Friday.
