Television Academy members once again tipped their hats to Netflix shows — series that are notably hosted only online instead of on cable or network TV — in a major way during Thursday's nominations announcement for the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards.
The first season of Orange Is the New Black earned 12 nods, the most for any comedy. House of Cards returns to the Emmy fray as the political thriller's second season snagged 13 nominations in the race.
OITNB will try to lock down a win in Outstanding Comedy Series, though it will have to dethrone perennial favorite Modern Family, which has won four years in row. The prison dramedy has momentum, though, having won Best Comedy Series at the Critics' Choice Awards.
The hit Netflix dramedy also snagged nominations for Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Art Direction and three episodes for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing.
Meanwhile, House of Cards will take on a stacked field in Outstanding Drama Series, including Breaking Bad's final season as well as fan-favorite Game of Thrones.
House of Cards also received nominations for Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Art Direction, Outstanding Casting, Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series, Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing, Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score) and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy Or Drama Series (One Hour).
In the individual contests, OITNB's Taylor Schilling cinched a nod for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of inmate Piper Chapman. Her co-star Kate Mulgrew (Red) also secured a nomination in supporting categories, while Natasha Lyonne (Nicky Nichols), Uzo Aduba (Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren) and Laverne Cox (Sophia Burset) were nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.
Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, who play the powerful Underwoods in House of Cards, are back in the lead drama races. They went home empty-handed at last year's Emmys, but earlier this year, Wright ended up winning the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Drama.
And though she was only on one episode in Season 2, Kata Mara snagged a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Reg E. Cathey, who plays Freddy, was also nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor.
Netflix ended the 2013 Emmys season with three awards — one historic win during the main broadcast and two more at the Creative Arts Emmys. House of Cards director David Fincher ran away with the Best Director title, helping the show become the first web-only series to win an award at any Primetime Emmys. He will attempt to defend his title this year.
Netflix racked up 14 nominations in 2013. This go-around, Netflix earned 31.
