Nintendo’s next Legend of Zelda game is going to revisit the franchise’s concept of linear storytelling, according to series producer Eiji Aonuma.

Aonuma introduced the next highly anticipated Legend of Zelda game, the first for the Wii U console, in a streaming presentation on Tuesday before the start of the second day of E3.

“In previous games, players could explore a large area,” Aonuma said. “As we moved into a 3D world, the hardware limited that experience.” While teams tried to string closed areas to give players the feeling of freedom, he said, it truly wasn’t a large area.

The Legend of Zelda series has often relied on sending players through events and areas in a specific order. Aonuma said the new game, which doesn’t have a title yet, will do away with that convention, letting players approach events in any order.

Fans were treated to a small preview of the game, in which protagonist Link encounters a human enemy armed with an explosive bow and arrows.

The next Legend of Zelda game will be released in 2015.
