There's talk of a reunion in the works for Katie Couric and Matt Lauer at NBC's Today Show.

The former co-anchors haven't been behind the desk together since Couric left in 2006, but with co-host Savannah Guthrie headed for maternity leave, the rumor mill has already kicked into high gear.

The New York Daily News reported that Couric spoke with Lauer at a recent social event about the possibility of a short-term return. Couric has also reportedly been seen chatting and lunching with Guthrie.

A deal to bring Couric back might be difficult, as she is currently works for Yahoo, which has a deal with ABC to share news content. Couric is one of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's biggest signings, inking the anchor to a $6 million per year deal to be the site's "global anchor."

A few weeks ago, Couric interviewed Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia, but despite the major deal, Couric has had a relatively low profile at Yahoo.

NBC did little to quiet the rumors about Couric, aside from saying that no official talks have begun. Couric has competition from another popular daytime television figure, Meredith Vieira.

Getting Couric even for a short stint would be big for Today, as putting the old band back together could help the show to reclaim its past lead over rival Good Morning America.
