George R.R. Martin is a slow writer. The brains behind the Song of Ice and Fire series (or as it’s better known by its first installment and subsequent HBO series, Game of Thrones ) takes his time to work on each volume. There are currently five books out now, with the sixth, The Winds of Winter, in production.

Fans of Martin’s work have been putting pressure on the writer to hurry up and finish the series (the first book was published in 1996). However, Martin isn’t exactly in a rush, and has said in interviews that “it will be done when it’s done.” Perhaps the only thing prodding him is the TV series, which is currently in its fourth season and quickly catching up with the published material.

Only Martin knows when we’ll get the next book. For now, let’s put things into perspective. He’s not the only author to take an outrageous amount of time to finish a series, let alone one book.

Here are seven authors whose books took longer to write than A Song of Ice and Fire.
