Microsoft is launching a version of its Office suite of productivity apps for Apple's iPad, the company announced at an event in San Francisco today.

The apps will go live in the App Store at 2 p.m. Eastern Time. The apps are much more full-featured than their counterparts on iPhone.

Reports about an imminent launch for Office for iPad began last week, but the software has been rumored for years. While many speculated about a version for iPad since the device's debut in 2010, initial reports about a launch began in 2012 when the now-defunct iPad magazine The Daily published a supposed photo of an iPad running Office.

Subsequent reports said the release was held up because of internal debate at Microsoft about whether Office for iPad would undermine the company's strategy for Windows 8, since bundling Office with Windows RT devices (such as the Surface) was a key part of the rollout. Former CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed the Office team was working on an iPad version last fall.
