The first day of Winter Olympics competition after the opening ceremony offered a beautiful, cloudless day in Sochi, Russia. Mashable's Photo of the Day captures Japanese snowboarder Yuki Kadono mid-flight during the Snowboard Men's Slopestyle Final. Kadono finished eighth Saturday, while U.S. snowboarder Sage Kotsenburg took home America's first gold medal of the Winter Games.
Getty Images photographer Cameron Spencer took the picture of Kadono sailing through the sky. He gave Mashable some analysis of his perfect shot .
“The backdrop of the mountains and the bright sunlight catching the moisture in the air created a spectacular frame, freezing an elite athlete at the top of his form with the all-important sense of place that tells the reader this is the Winter Olympics,” Spencer, an Australian who is covering his fourth Olympics, told Mashable via email.
