Winter Olympics Photo of the Day: Waiting on the Fog to Clear

What's This?

With numerous sports delayed due to fog, Olympic athletes along with their coaches and staff have been in a holding pattern as they wait for the weather around Sochi to clear.

On the upside, the fog set the stage for the above picture — Getty's Photo of the Day.

Taken by Getty Images photographer Richard Heathcote, the picture shows a coach heading down the tunnel after the Men's 15 km Biathlon Mass Start was delayed due to the conditions. The event is now slated to kick off on Tuesday.

“The story at the Olympics today, particularly in the mountains, has been the weather. High temperatures have caused some issues throughout the games, but the last two days have been plagued with thick fog over the mountains in Krasnaya Polyana," Heathcote told Getty.

"With several events being delayed and then postponed to the following days due to fog, this image of a coach carrying equipment down the stairs away from the venue captures the mood quite well. He’s walking alone, with his head hanging down, which communicates the frustration that we all feel during these fog delays.”
