New York Times columnist and former executive editor Bill Keller will leave the paper for a non-profit journalism start-up that will focus on the justice system.
The news was confirmed by a report in the Times , which detailed Keller's history at the publication, including a Pulitzer Prize award for his coverage of Russia during his time in the Moscow bureau.
Keller will take the editor-in-chief position at The Marshall Project, which describes itself as "a not-for-profit, non-partisan news organization dedicated to covering America’s criminal justice system." The site is schedule to launch later this year.
With Keller's exit, the Times loses an almost 30-year veteran of the paper. Keller started as a reporter in the Washington D.C. bureau in 1984, rising through the ranks to serve for over than eight years in the top editorial position.
