New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter intends to retire after the 2014 season.
The 13-time All Star and five-time World Series champion made the announcement in a message posted to his Facebook page Wednesday afternoon.
"And the thing is, I could not be more sure. I know it in my heart," Jeter wrote. "The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball."
In his 19 years with the Yankees, Jeter has become one of the most beloved and respected players in the history of baseball. He's widely expected to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame when he first becomes eligible five years after his retirement.
