Samsung Shows Off a TV That Bends

What's This?

Not content with unveiling a 105-inch curved TV set at CES 2014, Samsung also showed off a concept television that the viewer can bend via remote control.

The Samsung Bendable television, a mere 85 inches in width, is only a prototype unit. Samsung won't say whether it is planning to manufacture such a thing, or how much it might cost. But the concept is pretty neat — the plastic frame, as well as the 4K resolution LCD screen itself, starts flat and curves inwards at the touch of a button.

At first blush, you might wonder why Samsung didn't choose to roll this set out rather than the 105-inch curved version. After all, this gives consumers a choice: you might want a curved screen in certain light conditions, but prefer a flattened version at night.

Given that the Bendable television makes its magic happen via tiny mechanical servos in the back of the unit, however, it also seems much more likely to break down than its brethren. For the foreseeable future, the question TV buyers will have to ask themselves is: curved or straight?
