Google chairman Eric Schmidt admits to being surprised by the explosion of tablets in enterprise, but now believes that the trend will see a big shift in the way companies distribute software.

Speaking for the second time in a week at the Gartner Symposium in Orlando, Fla., Schmidt expressed surprised at how tablets have stormed enterprise and said that he expected most employees to bounce between their PC and mobile phone.

"I was actually surprised by this. I didn't call this,” he said in comments first reported by Business Insider.

“Would the phone replace the PC? I figured employees would be using a PCs and a phone. But it was the tablet revolution. It looks to us like the majority of enterprise computing is being done on mobile devices, in particular on tablets. That broke the old model.”

Schmidt, who also this week claimed that Android is "more secure than the iPhone," expects the trend to result in enterprises having to “dismantle” their existing technology, with firms presumably focusing on simpler apps and cloud-based software instead.

You can hear Schmidt's thoughts on tablets in enterprise in Gartner's video from the event. The conversation turns to tablets around the two-minute mark.
