This Career Site Will Help You Land Your Dream Job

What's This?

Kathryn Minshew launched The Muse — formerly known as The Daily Muse — in 2011 with Alexandra Cavoulacos and Melissa McCreery. It's a destination for career advice ranging from appropriate interview attire to mentoring to negotiating salaries.

The site was originally intended for young women, but officially opened the doors to men in June because the team realized it was impacting a far more broad and diverse crowd than it was originally targeting. Especially in this economy, there's a need for a platform where millennials can find inspiration, resources and advice for professional development, whether you're a new grad or a professional looking to take your career to the next level.

Today, The Muse has 1 million monthly unique active users, double its traffic from six months ago. The site features job listings, and glimpses into more than 100 companies, like Spotify, (RED) and Gucci, who pay for a multimedia company profile on the site to attract top talent.

The site's recent growth has been fueled by the $1.2M in venture capital it raised in January from Y Combinator, 500 Startups and others. With this funding, The Muse will be growing its team and launching new features to serve its community, which it's looking to scale to 10 million uniques.

To talk about the challenges of scaling smarter, Minshew met with her mentor, Sallie Krawcheck. Krawcheck is the business leader of (and investor in) female-networking program 85 Broads, a former president of Global Wealth and Investment Management of Bank of America and was one of Forbes' most powerful women in the world in 2005.

"I've admired Sallie since I first moved to New York in 2008, and we were finally introduced through several mutual friends early this year," says Minshew. "I think she's an incredible role model for women, and I've learned a lot from her leadership style. As The Muse grows into a bigger team, I find it particularly important to have women like Sallie as mentors and role models."
