OUYA Gives Credit to Kickstarter Backers Still Without Consoles

OUYA is giving a store credit to Kickstarter backers who still haven't received their console, the company said in an email sent out this weekend.

The $99, Android-based gaming console was a Kickstarter smash last year, raising $8.6 million in total. The company said it would deliver the console to its 43,000 backers, who pre-ordered the device, by March 2013. OUYA began fulfilling orders in April, but many backers are still complaining that they haven't received their console — despite the fact they already shipped to retail stores on June 25, 2013.

In an email sent to Kickstarter backers, OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman wrote, "It wasn't OK that some of you—our most loyal supporters—didn't get your OUYA until after it was on store shelves."

To make amends, OUYA Kickstarter backers who feel they received poor service can request a credit for $13.37 that can be used to purchase games in OUYA's Discovery Store.

Not only is this a gesture to appease backers, it also may help OUYA's low purchase rate; Uhrman revealed last week that only 27% of OUYA owners had purchased a game from the store. As a requirement, all OUYA games must be free to try for a portion of time, which is determined by the developer.

OUYA is available for purchase at Best Buy, Amazon and Gamestop, as well as a handful of other retailers.

Do you think the credit is sufficient compensation for the shipping delays? Give us your take in the comments, below.
