If you've ever had a moment of movie deja vu when you're in the middle of watching a brand new release but you're sure you heard that line before, it's probably not a sign of new-found magical powers. (Sorry to disappoint.)

Hollywood has recycled troupes and phrases for decades. The same line can pop up in Austin Powers and Toy Story.

Looking at clichés over genre and time can teach us a few things about film, like the value of a powerful delivery.

And more importantly, how you will hear the same thunk when a character is hit with a bus, despite it being a slapstick comedy or a grave drama.
