During Sunday's 56th Annual Grammy Awards, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis picked up four awards, including Best New Artist. They also swept the rap categories earning Best Rap Album for The Heist.
Not everyone thought the duo deserved the accolades though, namely Macklemore himself.
The artist Instagrammed an image of a text message he sent to fellow nominee Kendrick Lamar, in which he apologized to the rapper for having "robbed him."
Macklemore further explained his text in the Instagram picture's caption, saying Lamar deserved the Best Rap Album for Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City.
"My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album... I'm honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that's taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it's proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You're the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That's what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys
During their acceptance speech at the Grammys, Macklemore and Ryan reminded the audience that their album was completely self-made, and the group was never signed to a label, making their success that much more unlikely.
The duo also made headlines for their Same Love performance, a song that has become something of a gay rights anthem. They sang alongside Madonna, as 34 couples married during the live broadcast.
Lamar didn't go completely unnoticed at the Grammys, despite going zero for seven nominations. His performance with Imagine Dragons stirred up major social traffic — partially because Taylor Swift couldn't stop dancing during it.
Now let's just hope Lamar Instagrams his response to Macklemore so we can see how the rest of this conversation played out.
